Minnesota Route Permit: Fargo-St. Cloud

Minnesota Route Permit application for Monticello-St. Cloud transmission lineThe CapX2020 utilities filed a Route Permit application (see press release) on October 1, 2009 with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MN PUC) for the Fargo-St. Cloud 345-kilovolt transmission line project. Landowners owning property within one of two route options were mailed an informational packet in early October. Two main route options were proposed for the approximately 211-mile transmission line with a third alternative provided in certain areas. State law requires at least two route alternatives be proposed and that a preferred route be selected. Landowners will have the opportunity to provide alternative route options for consideration. The MN PUC will determine which route option will be certified after a comprehensive review that includes preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement, public meetings held by the Department of Commerce, Office of Energy Security and public hearings held by the MN PUC and overseen by an administrative law judge.

The CapX2020 utilities encourage all landowners, regardless if they have property within a route option, to continue attending meetings and participating in the public process. There have been instances in Minnesota where the MN PUC has certified routes not proposed in the utilities’ Route Permit application. Additionally, public participation continues to be valued at all stages of the process.
