Manitoba Hydro transmission expansion studies

MANTEX Study

The MANitoba Transmission EXpansion (MANTEX) Study is a combined vision and reliability study to identify the most cost effective, optimally sized reliable transmission project to deliver new Manitoba Hydro power into the MISO market.  This study has been submitted for inclusion into the Midwest ISO (MISO) Wind Hydro Synergy Study. The MISO study is designed to help determine the economic and wind synergistic benefit of providing greater and more flexible access to the Manitoba Hydro Resources. The studies were produced by seven CapX2020 partners, listed below.

Dakota Wind Study

The Dakota Wind Study analyzes the level of additional North and South Dakota generation resources, including but not limited to wind, that could be reliably delivered to the MISO market with the additional transmission projects identified in the Eastern Option and MANTEX studies.

Eastern Option Study

The Eastern Option Study (Option T) compares the transmission projects selected in the MANTEX Study with the Eastern Option (Manitoba to the Duluth area) alternative submitted into the MISO Wind Hydro Synergy Study.

MN Route Option Study

The MN Route Option Study analyzes whether a transmission route through the state of Minnesota, with a new substation termination near Barnesville, MN, is a reliable alternative for the MISO Wind Hydro Synergy Study.

Letellier – Thief River Falls 230 kV Option Study 

The Letellier – Thief River Falls 230 kV Option Study is a reliability study to identify an optimally sized cheaper alternative transmission project that could be used to meet the 250 MW  transfer requests from Manitoba to Minnesota customers. TSR Sensitivity Study

The Transmission Service Request (TSR) Sensitivity Study looks or analyzes whether the transmission alternatives selected in the MANTEX Study can reliably meet the needs of the Manitoba Hydro Transmission Services Requests studied by MISO. The study examined the reliability effects of delivering the new Manitoba Hydro power directly to the TSR customer service areas in Minnesota and Wisconsin rather than to the broad MISO market.
